K.KURIAN WAS GODFATHER OF A BOSS...FOR ME

ON FOURTH DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF K.KURIAN, ONCE AGAIN I RECALL MY 17 YEARS LONG ASSOCIATION WITH HIM.

IT WAS IN 1977, WHEN I WALKED UP AND DOWN THE STAIRS OF SHAH HOUSE, COLABA, AT LEAST THREE TIMES BEFORE MUSTERING COURAGE TO STEP INSIDE FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH K.KURIAN, THEN CEO OF RADEUS ADVERTISING, ONE OF THE BEST AGENCIES OF ITS TIME.

I WAS APPEARING FOR AN INTERVIEW FOR THE POST OF ' HINDI WRITER '. HE WAS A MAN WHO WAS NOT ONLY A BRAIN TO WORK WITH, BUT ALSO STOOD TALL AMONGST ADVERTISING CONTEMPORARIES SUCH AS SUBHASH GHOSHAL AND AYAZ PEERBHOY.

THE NEWS THAT HE IS NO MORE, IS SOMETHING I AM UNABLE TO COME TO TERMS WITH, EVEN TODAY.

IN THE 17 YEARS THAT I WORKED WITH HIM, I LEARNT 17 MILLION THINGS ABOUT EVERYTHING--PROFESSION, ETHICS, VALUES AND CONDUCT.

MY DAD PASSED AWAY WHEN I WAS 8, I LOST MY MOTHER WHEN I WAS 18; SO WHEN I JOINED HIM, I WANTED HIM TO GUIDE ME. AND HE DID. HE WAS LIKE A FATHER TO ME.

HE TAUGHT ME LIKE A TEACHER WOULD HIS FAVOURITE STUDENT, EXPLAINING EVER SO PATIENTLY WITH A PEN AND PAPER. I WAS LIKE A DRY SPONGE, ABSORBING EVERYTHING HE SAID. HE WAS A DIMINUTIVE MAN, BUT ONE WHO STOOD TALL ON WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND GOOD SENSE. HE WAS THE POWERHOUSE WHO BUILT TEAMS AND STEERED BRANDS SUCH AS AMUL, LIC, LIMCA, MAAZA AND BISLERI AND MADE EACH A LEADER IN THEIR CATEGORY. HE WAS AN INDULGENT BOSS, AT LEAST FOR ME. HE TAUGHT ME TO TREAT PEOPLE EQUALLY. NO WONDER, HE ENSURED THAT I FLEW WITH HIM IN THE SAME CLASS, STAYED IN A SIMILAR HOTEL ROOM AS HE DID.

HE LED BY EXAMPLE. AND WHAT A GREAT WALK, WE WALKED TOGETHER. IT WOULD  HAVE BEEN A JOURNEY RIGHT UP TO HIS LAST BREATH, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR ONE BREACH OF TRUST ON HIS PART WHEN ONE DAY, HE QUIETLY, WITHOUT EVEN A WHISPER, SOLD RADEUS--AN AGENCY I WAS LED ON TO BELIEVE I WOULD HEAD ONE DAY. IT WAS AN EARTH-SHATTERING MOMENT FOR AN ORPHAN LIKE ME, TO LOSE A PARENT AGAIN.IT BROKE MY HEART TO TURN MY BACK ON HIM AND WALK AWAY. AND IT STAYED THAT WAY SINCE THEN.

THE NEWS OF HIS DEATH WAS THAT ONE MOMENT OF LOSS, WHEN I SAW WHAT A GREAT CONTRIBUTION HE'S MADE TO WHO I AM. THE DARKNESS I FEEL TODAY IS BECAUSE THIS LIGHT HAS GONE OUT OF MY LIFE FOREVER.

PUBLIC RELATIONS ADVERTISING

PUBLIC RELATIONS ADVERTISING AS A SINGLE PHRASE SEEMS ALMOST A CONTRADICTION, CERTAINLY A PARADOX. NOT TOO MANY YEARS AGO, AND EVEN TODAY, PUBLIC RELATIONS ACTIVITIES ARE WIDELY SEPRATED FROM ADVERTISING.
THE DEBATE ABOUT WHETHER TO BUILD IMAGE OR TO SELL PRODUCT THROUGH ADVERTISING PERSISTS.
BUILDING IMAGE GENERALLY IS TERMED INSTITUTIONAL ADVERTISING; RARELY, PUBLIC RELATIONS ADVERTISING.

IF ONE GOES THE PUBLIC RELATIONS ADVERTISING ROUTE, PERHAPS THE PRECEPT TO PUT HIGH ON THE LIST IS THAT IT IS A MISTAKE TO LOOK UPON PAID TIME AND SPACE AS PAID EDITORIAL MATERIAL.

IT IS FAR BETTER TO SEIZE UPON A CAUSE, LAUNCH A GENUINE PUBLIC SERVICE.

PUBLIC RELATIONS ADVERTISING IS NOT DESIGNED TO INCITE THE PUBLIC TO RUSH OUT TO TRADE WITH YOU.

COMPANIES COULD TAKE CERTAIN TOPICS AND PURSUE IT THROUGH ADVERTISING FOR BETTERMENT OF PUBLIC AT LARGE.
IN THE RECENT PAST THE CAMPAIGN TO CREATE AWARENESS FOR ROTA VIRUS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE IN MY OPINION.

YOUTH FITNESS
YOUTH OPPORTUNITY
HELP PREVENT CRIME
EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
AID FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

MAZHAB NE BAANTA KUCH YUN HAR INSAAN KO
KE KAR DIYA SHARMINDA DUNIYA KE HAR HAIWAAN KO

kya hum sab mazhab aur dharm ke bataye huye achche raaston par nahi chal sakte hain.

kya hum dharm aur mazhab ke naam par sirf khoon hi bahate rahen ge.

yeh baat bhi sach hai ke duniya mein jitne bhi dharm aur mazhab aaye woh aadmiyon ko behtar insaan hi banane ke liye aaye lekin inhi dharmon aur mazhabon ke naam par jitna khoon baha, usse jama kar liya jaaye tau duniya ke saare mandir, masjid, girjaghar, gurdware uss khoon mein aasani se doob jaayen.

agar isi ko mazhab ya dharm kehte hain tau mujhe inn sabko door hi se salaam.

DO ADVERTISING AWARDS COUNT?

A CHRONIC DEBATE THAT SEEMS NEVER TO END IS AWARDS. IN MY OPINION THEY COUNT VERY HEAVILY. BUT JUST AS I DEPLORE ADVERTISING THAT IS CREATED TO A SPECIFIC FORMULA TO SCORE WELL ON A GIVEN METHOD OF RESEARCH, I THINK WRITING FOR THE SINGULAR PURPOSE OF WINNING AWARDS LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED ALSO. ITS THE MATTER OF BALANCE.

A GOOD COMMERCIAL WRITTEN WITH UNDERSTANDING OF ONE"S TARGET AUDIENCE, SIMPLE IN CONCEPT, BELIEVABLE IN CLAIM, EXCELLENTLY PRODUCED, STANDS A VERY GOOD CHANCE OF SCORING AND WINNING.

AWARDS ARE MOST OFTEN CRITICISED BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE"NT EVER WON THEM. I HAVE SEEN HARDHEADED ANTIAWARDS BUSINESSMEN GRIN LIKE SCHOOLBOYS WHEN THEY HELD THEIR FIRST AWARD IN THEIR HANDS.
